The 56-year-old producer – who admitted to having a month-long ‘complete psychological breakdown’ before their divorce – appeared on the Call Her Daddy podcast earlier this week where she talked about how the Disney Channel series had impacted their brood.
Billy Ray, 62, had rose to stardom with one hit wonder Achy Breaky Heart in 1992 and did not find much success after.
Tish explained that he was not set to be part of the series until she saw an opportunity to make it a family affair.

The 56-year-old producer appeared on the Call Her Daddy podcast earlier this week where she talked about how the Disney Channel series had impacted their brood.
‘And then I brought Miley out to audition for Hannah and she had gotten it. And then one of the casting directors said a joke, like, “Ugh, too bad we can’t afford her real dad.” And I said, “Oh, maybe you can.”‘
Tish said that the series ‘became it’s own phenomenon’ which they did not expect when it first premiered.
She explained: ‘Hannah Montana was just different. And I don’t think anyone could’ve ever anticipated it or thought how big it would be.’
The entire family – which includes five children: Trace, 34, Christopher, 31, Miley, 31, Braison, 29, and Noah, 24 – lived in Toronto, Canada at the time for one of Billy Ray’s shows.
However when Miley got the Hannah Montana gig, she knew that they had to make a decision because traveling back and forth for the family would be ‘really hard.’
She said: ‘Miley had already gotten Hannah, and I was already stressed about, ‘What are we gonna do?’ I couldn’t, as a mom, have half my kids in Tennessee and be out [in L.A.] with Miley, like I just could not do that.
‘And so I was like, “I have to bring all the kids.” And so that’s when I said to Billy Ray, ‘You should come audition for the dad. Because they love you and they’re really interested. Yes, it would be a pay cut but our family could be together.’
It is interesting to note that Billy Ray had previously sung a different note about the show’s influence on their family.

She made the decision to leave country singer Billy Ray in 2020 – the same year her mum died – and she reflected on the demise of her 30-year marriage on the Call Her Daddy podcast with daughter Brandi on Tuesday.
Tish revealed Billy went to Tennessee during the Covid pandemic while she stayed in California where Wrecking Ball singer Miley, 31, lives.
While puffing on a joint, Tish explained: ‘During that period, I took a really good, hard look at life, my life, and like, ‘What was I gonna do?’
‘Because it had not been in a good place for a long time. And I think I did stay so long out of fear of being alone. Like I had met him when I was 23, 24.’
Tish said that the COVID-19 pandemic had actually helped her gain the strength to be able to leave the Achy Breaky Heart hitmaker.

The early days of the pandemic were especially heard as she received the news that her mother had died in August 2020.
The mother explained: ‘I was alone during that time, I had to go through it alone, and I literally can’t believe I did that.
‘It was so crazy, my two biggest fears in life were being alone and my mom passing away. And I had one month of a complete psychological breakdown.’
The whole process had sent her entire world into a tailspin as she detailed what an incredibly hard time it was for her.
Tish explained: ‘It was the worst thing, it was not good… Kind of pushed the mom thing under the rug, and then the divorce thing came.

Anyone else? Your wife, your fiancée, all the people that we love. Thank you all so much. I don’t think I forgot anyone. But I might have forgotten underwear. Bye!’

‘And I grew up financially stable and emotionally stable, I think in my relationships also. And that’s something that my dad didn’t have. I’ve seen how that affects a lot of people that go from having nothing to everything. It’s a really dangerous place.’
