Selena Gomez‘s mother, Mandy Teefey, spoke about her daughter’s social media breaks in a new interview.

The 31-year-old performer has become well-known for stepping away from her various outlets over the past few years, and she has opened up about how her mental health has been affected by the presence of social media in her life.

The mother of the singer – who recently attended a Grammys afterparty with her boyfriend Benny Blanco – told Elite Daily that her daughter did not set specific boundaries or make promises regarding the length of each of her breaks.

Teefey, 47, expressed that Gomez ultimately decided how long each of her breaks would be, stating: ‘Whatever time Selena needs, she gives herself.’

The hitmaker’s mother also revealed that she often took short breaks from social media, although she regularly returned to her various outlets.

‘I can go a week without looking at any social media, and then I’ll get on there and I’ll try to catch up,’ she admitted.

Teefey went on to advise her fans to take occasional breaks from social media in an effort to ground themselves in reality.

‘You’re more at ease, in your world, and living in the moment. It’s so much more peaceful,’ she said.

The performer’s mother then spoke about how she went about mental health days with her daughter, who often spends time with her family after disconnecting from social media.

‘We come together, and we plan a movie day; we cook food and just kind of relax and hang out. Then, we all end up falling asleep,’ she said.

One of Gomez’s earliest breaks took place in 2016, following the cancelation of several dates on her Revival Tour.

At the time, the Only Murders In The Building star was the most-followed individual on Instagram.

One of the hitmaker’s most recent breaks took place just after the Golden Globes Award ceremony in early January, where she was alleged to have gossiped about Timothee Chalamet with Taylor Swift and Keleigh Sperry.

The break did not last for very long, however, and she has been active on her Instagram account in recent weeks.

Gomez opened up about one of her stints away from social media during an interview with InStyle, where she stated: ‘Taking a break from social media was the best decision that I’ve ever made for my mental health.’

The hitmaker also expressed that, after having become accustomed to learning about the opinions of her detractors through the internet, she responded by separating herself from social media.

‘The unnecessary hate and comparisons went away once I put my phone down. I’ll have moments where that weird feeling will come back, but now I have a much better relationship with myself,’ she stated.
