Celebrity chef reveals the truth behind restaurants’ ‘specials’ menu as debate rages over whether it’s simply a way to shift expiring food

Celebrity chef Manu Feildel has weighed in on a debate about the ‘specials’ menu at restaurants.

On Monday’s The Kyle and Jackie O Show, hosts Kyle Sandilands and Jackie ‘O’ Henderson were arguing over whether the menu items are a way to move expiring food.

Jackie, 48, believed the specials menu was a creative outlet for chefs, while Kyle, 52, thought it was about not wasting ingredients before they spoiled, however when they called Manu, he revealed the truth.

‘It depends where you go. If you go to the coffee shop on the corner, maybe they’re trying to get rid of what’s at the back of the fridge,’ said the 49-year-old My Kitchen Rules host.

‘But if you go to a restaurant, a special is a special. That’s why it’s called special.’

However, Kyle pressed the French chef on the question, asking him about old meat in the supermarket.

‘Isn’t that the same as the old meat at Coles, the one that’s gone grey with the “special” sticker?’

‘No, it’s not special. But the price is special,’ Manu replied.

Kyle and Jackie then conceded they were technically both correct about the specials menu.

‘Well thank you for the truth, Manu. So some restaurants are doing that as a business, but at the top end of town reputation matter and they’re doing it as a creative outlet.’

‘So we were both right,’ said Jackie.

It comes after Manu was the subject of a cruel on-air prank orchestrated by The Kyle and Jackie O Show and his son Jonti.

Jonti, 18 – who signed with the South Sydney Rabbitohs’ junior division – was recorded pranking his dad by telling him that he’d ruined his NRL career before it had even begun after a wild weekend doing drugs.

‘I f**ked up, dad. Next week, the Bunnies are going to drug test us,’ Jonti joked.

He continued: ‘I went and smoked weed with my friends last weekend so I’m not sure if it’s going to be in my system or not.’

At this point, the celebrity chef went ballistic as he scolded his son: ‘Come on, bro. Come on. F**k. F**k, Jonti. F**k, f**k, f**k, Jonti. Come on. S**t, bro.

‘We’ve talked about this. Think about your freaking career, man. I don’t want to tell you off, Jonti. I really don’t want to tell you off, but you know you’ve got to grow up.’

Feildel went on to say he already thought Jonti’s drinking was too much and tried not to judge it, ‘but now you’re smoking f**king reefer. What’s next? F**k.’

But when Jonti asked his dad to pee in the cup for him so he could pass the upcoming drug test, Feildel was adamant his son would have to take responsibility for his actions, even if it meant losing his spot on the team.

Feildel sounded relieved as he realised it was a prank. ‘You bunch of w**kers. Oh, my God. I was just about to cry.’
