BBC Breakfast was seemingly struck by a technical blunder during an interview with eight-year-old Stevie who is an aspiring singer on Tuesday morning’s show.

The programme, which aired for the second day running without regular host Jon Kay, saw stand-in Ben Thompson and Sally Nugent chat to Stevie and his father.

The father and son duo, who live in Kilkenny in Ireland, were invited onto the show to chat about Stevie’s impressive performance of the Irish rugby anthem during the Six Nations match between Ireland and Italy on Sunday.

However, as Stevie and his father tried to discuss the life-changing moment, their voices were muffled by a technical glitch which interrupted the interview.

During the remote interview, which was conducted over video link, they encountered issues with the sound which irritated viewers at home.

The sound kept dropping out, meaning that viewers struggled to make out what the young interviewee was saying during the segment.

At one stage, puzzled-looking presenter Sally lunged forward, appearing to try and get a better idea of what  Stevie was saying.

Fans admitted they were disappointed to miss out on the interview due to the faulty sound and took to X to share their grievances.

One said: ‘Are your sound/technical team off today? Sound on some of your interviews is dreadful.’

While another added: ‘What is going on with the sound this morning?’

Jon Kay failed to appear on the show for the second day running and his absence is so far yet to be explained.

Ben has so far stood in on numerous occasions since the beginning of the year, while Carol Kirkwood presented the weather updates.

Earlier this week it was revealed that fellow presenter Ben Boulos is set to return to screens after his month-long absence.

The programme has seen a shake up of hosts in recent weeks with Naga Munchetty also taking a break from the show.

Ben, 39, who changed his last name to reflect his heritage in 2021, has been away on a trip to the United States.

The news anchor visited New York, New Orleans and Washington DC but has now returned to the iconic red sofa.

His co-star Naga has also been back on screen after several week away with Sally sitting in for her.

Last month, BBC Ben was interrupted while live on television by a man who had mistaken him for an employee.

The presenter, who was sporting a hi-vis jacket, was presenting a segment from a market hall in Birmingham when the hilarious encounter took place.

A confused-looking man could be seen wandering about behind Ben, who was talking about the rate of inflation on the prices of food ahead of Christmas.

While in mid-flow, the man walks up to Ben and asks him something, to which he replies: ‘I don’t work here, I’m just doing the news!

From the BBC’s studio in Salford, presenter Jon Kay thanked Ben for fitting his reporting into his ‘shift at the market’.

Ben later reshared the moment on X, formerly known as Twitter, much to the enjoyment of his followers who laughed at the mishap.

In the comments section, his fans posted a series of laughing face emojis and quips, including one who wrote: ‘Always good to have something to fall back on Ben!’

Another person branded the moment ‘more Breakfast TV gold’, referencing similar gaffes which have taken place over the years.
