A quarter of renewable supply is in Scotland and there is a lack of grid connections to carry it.

The introduction of zonal pricing means consumer bills could be cut by £51billion over 15 years, according to the energy watchdog Ofgem.

In a speech in London today, Energy Secretary Claire Coutinho will also say building new gas power stations will maintain supply when the wind or sun does not power up renewables.

Ministers say they are committed to reaching Net Zero in a “sustainable, pragmatic way” that allows the UK not to rely on tyrants such as Vladimir Putin for gas supply.

Ms Coutinho will say: “It is clear to me that we have entered a new era.

“It’s an era in which energy can be weaponised against us.”

Octopus Energy boss Greg Jackson said locational pricing would bring the lowest electricity prices in Europe to parts of the UK.
