Ex-Prem who retired at 27 demands 'investigation' after Lascelles ACL tear

FORMER Premier League star Kean Bryan has demanded an “investigation” after Newcastle announced Jamaal Lascelles’s ACL injury.

The captain went down after just 17 minutes in the Magpies’ 4-3 victory against West Ham and appeared to be in a great deal of pain.

Newcastle shared the disappointing news earlier on Sunday that Lascelles suffered a rupture to the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and will need surgery.

They tweeted: “Newcastle United can confirm that club captain Jamaal Lascelles suffered a rupture to the ACL in his right knee during Saturday’s victory over West Ham United.

“After seeing a specialist consultant, he is expected to undergo surgery next week and will be out for 6-9 months.

“Everyone at #NUFC extends their best wishes to Jamaal for a full and speedy recovery.”

The Magpies have been plagued by injury issues all season long with the likes of Nick Pope and Callum Wilson long-term absentees.

And Kieran Trippier, Sven Botman and Joelinton were also unavailable for the visit to West Ham.

It was a defiant display from Newcastle considering their injury woes, which left Premier League star Kean Bryan to slam Eddie Howe‘s side.

Bryan said: “Needs investigating! why are so many happening? Boots? Pitches? Overload?”

Speaking from experience Bryan was forced to retire last year at 27-year-old due to an ongoing knee injury.

And the ex-Sheffield United star was not the only one to criticise Newcastle as TNT Sports commentator Joe Cole had something to say about their medical team.

Cole responded said: “I’ve played in teams with injury crises but this is a bit more than what I’ve ever seen.

“But what I will say is it’s never really bad luck. It’s always to do with how training it, the methodology, and overtraining players, there’s an art to it.

“The problem at football clubs is you get lots of people from a sports science background, strength and conditioning and they’ve all got an opinion.”

But while people are pointing fingers at Newcastle they are not the only team suffering from ACL injuries this season as it has become a growing problem across the top flight.

Arsenal‘s Jurrien Timber has been out since he tore his ACL just 50 minutes into the season.

Chelsea‘s Wesley Fofana, Aston Villa‘s Emiliano Buendia, Tottenham’s Ivan Perisic and Brentford‘s Rico Henry to name a few have all suffered with the same blow this season.
