Hutchison, 52, only made 45 league appearances during his time at Merseyside but could have seen his time at the club come to an end even sooner.

The retired midfielder admitted that hardman boss Souness wanted to swap him for Southampton goalkeeper Tim Flowers in 1993.

Hutchison refused the move and was convinced that Souness was angered by his decision.

However, the Scot managed to convince the manager to put him back in the team by showing his “b******s” in training by having a scrap.

He told Ironcast: “[Souness] wanted to swap me for Tim Flowers down in Southampton.

“But I didn’t want to go because Southampton were always in the bottom and were going to go down. So I did not go.

“Souness put on a 6v6 and picked himself on one team and me on another because he was going to crunch me.

“So sod’s law, the game is going on and the ball comes between me and Souness.

“He has come in two-footed and I know he is going to do me so I have gone higher and two-footed him.

“Like a cartoon sketch, we have both fallen on the floor like ‘pow, bang’, he is giving me one of them and punching me in the ribs.

“I’m like ‘it’s the gaffer’… I am punching him back and we are rolling and rolling.

“His hair is all over the place, I am quite emotional and he has jumped up and gone ‘see that’s what we need… a bit of b******s, he will be in the team on the weekend.’

“All the young lads Jamie [Redknapp] and Steve [McManaman] have gone ‘he’s finished’ and I played on the Saturday.”

Hutchison eventually left Liverpool in 1994 when he moved to West Ham in a £1.5million deal.

During his time at the Hammers, he played alongside the likes of Ian Bishop and John Moncur.

Hutchison is convinced that they would be two of the most valuable players in the current market.

He added: “Players like John Moncur and Ian Bishop are £100m players these days.

“I’m not saying Ian is the same as a [Sergio] Busquets, Rodri and [Michael] Carrick quality, but he was unbelievable.

“He was a guy that was so good in the wrong era.”
