MERCEDES-Benz has electrified the G-Wagon without cutting into its rich off-road identity and famous boxy appearance.

A breakthrough in the fusion of tradition and technology, the first-of-its-kind electric vehicle’s Edition One model has a $180,000 price tag.

The G580 with EQ technology maintains the cubic profile of the classic G-Wagon, but with a slightly raised hood, slots in the rear wheel arches for airflow, and silver “EQ” badges, according to Mercedes.

Fans of the iconic off-roader are ditching the gas station for the 116-kWh high-voltage lithium-ion battery-powered SUV.

Strategically placed on the bottom of the frame, the SUV maintains a low center of gravity.

It utilizes both AC and DC charging, with DC-fast charging that can take the vehicle from 10-80% SoC (State of Charge) in roughly 30 minutes.

For maximum protection, the battery is stored in a torsion-resistant casing and has three charging programs: standard, work, and home.

With an estimated 240 miles of range, per Car and Driver, the SUV will be the first production vehicle from Mercedes-Benz with individual four-wheel drive.

It contains four individually controlled electric motors near the wheels, featuring two in the front and two in the rear.

The plush interior features leather upholstery, a nappa-leather-covered steering wheel, and ambient lighting.

Its MBUX infotainment system features a 12.3-inch touchscreen and voice recognition activated without having to say “Hey Mercedes.”

Augmented reality navigation superimposes directions on the camera images in real-time to guide drivers to look up from their phones before the light turns green.

Maserati has unveiled its stunning GranCabrio Folgore, joining the limited options for four-seat all-electric convertibles

There’s also a branded storage box for charging cables in the rear where a spare tire would be on an ICE G-class, with the opportunity to add one.

OFF-ROADING MADE EASY

With selectable low-range off-road gear reduction, the G580 is built to weather rough terrain, with the ability to rotate 360 degrees in its own footprint.

A redesigned off-road control center is equipped with a “transparent hood” function to enable a digital off-road experience.

G-Turn and G-Steering technology ensures the vehicle can make two complete turns on unpaved or loose off-road surfaces.

The intelligent off-road crawling function gives additional off-road support by providing ideal propulsion.

It also keeps the vehicle at a pre-set speed, similar to cruise control.

Three crawl speeds are available, including slow crawl, variable crawl, and fast crawl to handle driving obstacles without having to balance braking and accelerating.

Drivers can select the target speed in three levels using the steering wheel shift paddles.

And it still maintains the G-roar sound, bringing a specific driving sound to the new electric G-Class.

The 2025 model-year electric G-Class is exclusively available in the US in five colors: South Sea Blue Magno, Obsidian Black Metallic, Opalite White Magno, Opalite White Bright, and Classic Grey Solid.
