Warning: This story contains spoilers for the Season 2 finale due Monday, March 27 All American: Coming home.
Going out with a bang! All American: Homecoming’s the Season 2 finale featured no shortage of plot twists – with one of the episode’s biggest surprises being what really happened between Simone and Damon.
The finale, which aired on Monday, March 27, shocked viewers by revealing that Simone (Gefri Maya) and Damon (Peyton-Alex Smith) slept together after the popular CW series previously insinuated that the two only shared a kiss. The emotional, physical bond the pair have shared has left Simone – who is currently dating Lando (Martin Bobb Semple) – up in the air about who she should choose.
While Simon and Damon, dubbed ‘Dimone’ by viewers, have been a favorite couple since the show’s premiere in February 2022, Maya, 28, is still unsure if the timing is right for the duo to do something serious. .
“I think it’s not the time for them to get together just because they both have so many things they need to sort out in their own personal lives,” said the Private practice alum exclusively told Us weekly ahead of the final. “Reading the final and watching the final were two different experiences. Being able to watch Damon open the door with his dad and get in the mood to actually build a real bond that really means a lot to him you can’t really infiltrate that especially on top of sports and he’s trying to find his own groove.”
Maya added that she is “in this new space” with Simone with her collegiate experience and “regaining her energy and strength with tennis” along with finding her own path and joining a sorority. It’s a journey she may have to take on her own, especially after breaking up All Americans Jordan (Michael Evans Behling) – something that Maya insists her character “definitely” moved on from.
“She comes to terms with her relationship with herself and with love, and questions that. And with [her sorority] PKZ and the relationship she has built with these women,” she said Us. “It may not be the time to focus on it [Damon]. Mainly because of the gravity he has.”
Simone’s love life wasn’t the only bombshell to drop in Monday’s finale. JR (Sylvestor Powell) tackled health issues (seemingly due to his anemia) and Nate (Rhoyle Ivy King) won her presidential campaign. However, the most shocking twist came in the final moments of the episode when it was revealed that Marcus (Cory Hardict) – who is dating Amara (Kelly Jennette) – is actually married.
Mark Jacksonco-showrunner of Homecomingexplained Us that the idea for a secret wife came about when the show realized it needed to “shake” Marcus and Amara.
“No couple can be happy forever,” Jackson joked. “So it just felt like a really unique opportunity. Because there’s so much about Marcus that we still don’t know. Even though we know a little bit about his mental health journey, I think it was just the excitement of learning something new about him, something unexpected that doesn’t fit his character.
Creator and co-showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carrollnoted meanwhile that there are “lost years in it [Marcus’] character” that have not been accounted for – but promised that everything will be explained as All American: Coming home gets the green light for a season 3.
“He left and was called up professionally. He played in the minors and had this injury before he could be called up to the majors,” she said Us. “But there were always those few years that even Amara can’t fully account for because he pushed her away. So it was always an interesting space that we would come back to one day and fill those years. Right. how did he become [the] person [he is now] of the star baseball player in college? How does he become such a wise, calming, grounded version of himself?”
