Anne Hathaway and Doja Cat take Valentino’s haute couture ride to clubland

Valentino unveiled his Spring-Summer 2023 Haute Couture collection in what felt like an underground club. With a start time of 9.30 pm, the guests were eager, given the outside temperature of 31 degrees, to see what Pierpaolo Piccioli was going to come up with next.

The event took place at the Bridge Club on Pont Alexandre III and drew a crowd that gathered to see which celebrities were in attendance. As they descended the stairs to the level of the River Seine, stars and influencers on the red carpet stopped to have their photos taken before entering the dark grungy space. Seated in the front row was a lineup of stars including Anne Hathaway, Dove Cameron, Sofia Carson, Sam Smith, Doja Cat, Charli XCX, celebrity stylist Law Roach, Elvis director Baz Luhrmann and his wife, the producer and costume and production designer Catherine Martin.

The show featured celebrity models Anok Yai, the first Sudanese model to open the Prada show in 2018 (Naomi Campbell was the only black model to do so before), and Adut Akech, who starred in Beyoncé’s visual album Black is king.

Simply put, the collection straddled the borderline between two very different worlds: the couture universe and the club scene – hence the location of the show. Piccioli believes it is possible to merge the two. “Their shared values: mutual gestures of extravagance, the idea of clothing as tools of transformation, the creation of a true self, a dichotomous but dual vocabulary of display and revelation, perseverance through life,” the House shared in-show notes.

From using voluminous silhouettes to ones that were fitted and slim and everything in between, the creative director showed a contrast between a highly textured world and a loose domain. There were volant ruffles that gave architecture to the body and reinterpreted dots. He also played with the details, using ostrich feathers, drapes, embroidery and tied bows in a collection marked by personality, emotion and a sense of fun.

She wore a bright neon yellow Valentino ensemble, guest Kylie Minogue shared The Hollywood Reporter: “I am still trying to process it all. I love that it represented individuality. You can see references – I know he was talking about [late performance artist] Leigh Bowery and Grace Jones, who have been elevated to true club culture. I just loved it. It all happened so fast, I will have to process it all and drool over it all. But the cleanliness of some of it and the cool colors, your blue, your green, your pink, it’s just stunning. And that confidence feels very modern, and you can see that presence making its way into high street fashion.”

After the show, guests were taken to Valentino’s post-presentation party to celebrate the new collection.
