Armie Hammer’s ex-wife Elizabeth Chambers says she heard about allegations “as the public was”

Elizabeth Chambers says she found out about ex-husband Armie Hammer’s allegations and fetishes “as the public was,” and it left her speechless.

In a profile for Elle published Wednesday, the former Current TV host and owner of Bird bakery talked about how she and Hammer fell in love, how their relationship was reshaped by his rising fame and how he had become by the end – around the same time the allegations emerged – “the worst.”

When discussing how their relationship fell apart while in the Cayman Islands during the COVID-19 lockdown, Chambers offered a different perspective than the one Hammer gave in a British GK profile published in September 2020, describing how he felt like a wolf “caught in a snare” and called the tension the by-product of a “very complicated, intense situation, with big personalities all locked up in a tiny little place. ”

For Chambers, “his behavior was less caged animal and more obnoxious,” according to Elle. Their marriage was already deteriorating, and she recalled spending less time together and at a dinner party “they didn’t even talk [to each other].”

The breaking point in their union, which had been tested before, was Hammer’s decision to leave her and his children on the Caymans to help restore a motel outside of Joshua Tree National Park with a friend. “He was the worst,” she recalls. “My heart was broken into nine million pieces and I drove him to the airport anyway.”

“Marriage is always going to be difficult, and like any relationship, you go through a process,” Chambers added, pointing out that it wasn’t quite a clear, consistent line to their divorce. “Especially when you mix success and fame; it just gets magnified more.

Chambers, who filed for divorce in LA Superior Court in July 2020, added that “the dissolution of my family” was her biggest fear. “You can give, you can love, you can be there for someone, but you also have to hold people accountable for their actions.”

Following their divorce, allegations surrounding Hammer’s sexual fetishes and behavior, including unverified social media posts allegedly of the actor expressing an interest in cannibalism, began to surface. (Hammer has denied them.) The bakery owner and mother said she was stunned. “I learned things like the audience,” Chambers explained. “I was like, ‘There are no words. What the fuck?'”

She said that regardless of her ex-husband’s interest, in their own marriage, “boundaries” were an important part of their relationship. “[Over time] your partner learns things about themselves,” she noted. “They grow, you grow; you hope you grow together.”

Instead, she experienced a complete 180-degree turnaround from the early years of their marriage, which she says felt “completely magical” when she traveled with him to film shoots and on press trips.

Chambers declined to comment on Hammer’s recent Sky Mail interview — his first major sit-down since the allegations — but in a piece published Feb. 4, the actor continued to deny criminal wrongdoing in relation to the 2021 sexual misconduct allegations highlighted in the House of Hamer docuseries.

At least one of those claims — which included screenshots of alleged communication between women and Hammer — involved a high-profile social media personality, who, according to the Airmail article, reportedly referring to herself as “chasing him” in a message to Hammer’s ex-wife. (The prosecution declined to answer questions for the Airmail story.) Hammer described their interaction as a consensual scene without consent.

He confirmed that he checked into a substance abuse treatment center in May 2021 after being dropped by his talent agency and publicist and leaving several projects including Shotgun marriage, Gaslight And The offer. He also pointed to sexual abuse as a teenager as the impetus for his interest in BDSM, saying that after those allegations he experienced suicidal thoughts and survived a suicide attempt.

In the wake of the allegations and the divorce, Chambers said Elle she thought mostly of her children, feeling now that she no longer wanted their children to be a mix of herself and Hammer. “Do I want my son to be this? Would I want my daughter to stay in such a relationship?” she wonders. “One day I want them to be able to say, ‘I am independent of what happened in previous generations. I’m aware of it, but I’m the person I’m not because of where I came from.’”

She is also very clear about Hammer’s actions that have nothing to do with her. “The last thing I ever want to do is get angry at someone else’s actions, which have nothing to do with me,” she said. “It’s not going to help me, and it’s not going to help anyone around me.”
