Bombshell moment Alex Murdaugh was confronted by police with evidence showing he was at the crime scene

Alex Murdaugh sobbed when confronted by law enforcement with evidence proving he was at the crime scene minutes before his wife and son were killed.

The tense interview played to the jury on Wednesday during the legal scion’s murder trial revealed many discrepancies in his story compared to what he told police the night of the murders and in his second interview a few days later, on June 10. His story also differed from what other witnesses have since told the jury.

South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) special agent David Owen told Murdaugh in the taped interview that his timeline “doesn’t match.”

He also established with Murdaugh that he knew he had changed clothes on the night of the murders – and that “family coats of arms” had been used to execute his wife and son.

Murdaugh, 54, faces life in prison for the murders of his 52-year-old wife Maggie and their 22-year-old son Paul, whose bodies were found on June 7, 2021 near the kennels on the family’s estate. Murdaugh denies the double murder.

One of the major inconsistencies revealed in the August 2021 interview was that Murdaugh repeatedly denied being with Maggie and Paul at the dog kennel shortly before they were shot.

He also suggested to police that he was at his mother’s house that night for much longer than he actually was and that prior to this interrogation he had failed to mention that he had changed clothes that evening – which was shown on video evidence.

There were also inconsistencies with the timeline of when Murdaugh left his law firm that day and the reason why Maggie was called home from the family’s beach house.

Prosecutors allege that Murdaugh shot and killed his wife and son in the dog kennels on the family’s property around 8:50 p.m. on the night of June 7, 2021.

Murdaugh claims he slept at home and when he woke up went to visit his mother and was there “45 minutes, an hour.” However, janitor Shelley Smith who testified earlier and Murdaugh’s SUV records showed the visit lasted only 20 minutes.

Murdaugh said he found the bodies of his wife and son when he returned to the estate on Moselle Road.

But Officer Owen confronted Maudaugh, “I have information that Paul was on the phone and Maggie was heard in the background and you were heard in the background, and that was before…”

Murdaugh interjected: “Rogan Gibson asked me if I was up there. He said he thought it was me.’

Owen asked what time that was. Murdaugh replied, “At 9 o’clock? No sir. Not when my times are good.’

Murdaugh has claimed that the last time he saw Maggie and Paul alive was when they were eating dinner at the house at around 8:15 p.m.

He told police he didn’t see them in the kennels until he came back from his mother’s house to find them dead. He called 911 at 10:07 p.m.

A video taken by Paul at 8:44 p.m. — just minutes before prosecutors say he and his mother were killed — places Murdaugh at the scene.

Rogan Gibson, who described the Murdaughs as his “second family,” testified that he was “100 percent” sure he could hear Alex’s voice, along with Paul and Maggie’s.

He had been talking to Paul all evening and also told the jurors that in a phone conversation with Paul at 8:40 pm he could also hear Alex.

Another friend of Paul’s, Will Loving, also testified that in the video from the kennels, he was certain he could hear Alex’s voice.

The third never-before-seen interview was played in court Wednesday as part of SLED agent David Owen’s testimony taking the stand this morning.

Owen said Murdaugh called him on July 28 with questions about the investigation and whether he could get possessions, including his golf clubs, out of his 2021 Chevrolet Suburban because he was about to go on vacation.

Owen testified that he wanted to question Murdaugh again, but he said Murdaugh couldn’t meet right away, so the interview was scheduled for August 11.

During the video, Owen was asked to describe Murdaugh’s reaction when he told him that “family coats of arms” had been used in the murders.

“Nothing,” he testified.

When Owen asked Murdaugh when he changed his clothes, Murdaugh replied that he doesn’t remember.

Owen said the 7:38 p.m. Snapchat video on Paul’s phone showed Murdaugh in a blue shirt and khaki pants.

But when Murdaugh was wearing a white t-shirt and shorts when police arrived on the scene.

“I think I changed when I got home,” Murdaugh replied.

Owen also asked Murdaugh why he called and texted Maggie before leaving Moselle for his mother’s house, but not going to the kennel to check on her.

Owen said Murdaugh had previously mentioned that Maggie would accompany him to Almeda to visit his mother. But Murdaugh says on the video that he doesn’t remember those plans.

Three weeks into the trial of disgraced South Carolina attorney Alex Murdaugh, prosecutors have called dozens of witnesses who have given varying—and sometimes incoherent—testimonies.

Jurors have heard from the investigators who found the bodies of Murdaugh’s wife and son, and technicians who found gunshot residue, broke open cell phones to take videos and tested dozens of ammunition shells.

They’ve heard of betrayed law firm employees, heartbroken friends of Murdaugh and his family, and a man whose insurance policy was stolen after his mother, the Murdaughs’ housekeeper, died in a fall in their home.

But witnesses have been called in disorganized groups and tantalizing bits of evidence have been presented but not explained. The defense hopes to begin its case in the middle of next week and had scheduled a week of testimony, but is reconsidering that due to the length of the trial.

Following the murder trial, Murdaugh will face more than 100 additional criminal charges ranging from drug trafficking to allegations that he stole nearly $9 million from clients and other attorneys.

Prosecutors say Murdaugh lured and shot his wife and son to their 1,700-acre hunting lodge.

The state also claims his life spiraled out of control amid years of opioid addiction and mounting debt.

Murdaugh pleaded not guilty in June, and the blockbuster trial is expected to feature wild allegations of dark family secrets, financial ruin and hedonistic excesses.

In total, more than 220 people were able to testify against Murdaugh in the trial.

TIMELINE: NIGHT OF THE MURDERS
