Avatar: The way of the water has crossed the $2 billion mark at the global box office in a huge win for director James Cameron, the only filmmaker to direct three films to reach the milestone.
Disney announced on Sunday that the big-budget sequel will close the weekend with a worldwide total of $2.024 billion, the highest gross of the pandemic era. It has made $598 million domestically and $1.426 billion abroad, including a hefty $230 million from China.
The way of the water is only the sixth film to cross the $2 billion threshold, unadjusted for inflation. Sometimes this week the movie climbs to number 4 on the list of movies that have always been good.
The first avatar, released 13 years ago, remains the highest-grossing film of all time with $2.9 billion in worldwide ticket sales, including re-releases. from Cameron Titanic also joins the club for $2.19 billion.
When promoting The way of the water, Cameron indicated that it would eventually need to make $2 billion to be considered a runaway success. The sequel cost Disney and 20th Century north of $400 million to produce before it was released to market.
Cameron’s film has been a box office bright spot since its release in mid-December and remains at the top of the chart.
In terms of other global top earners, Avengers: Endgame ranks at number 2 behind the first avatarearning $2.79 billion.
