A drunk 20-year-old woman smashed a Desperados bottle over the head of a female victim before kicking a second woman to the ground as she stepped inside to help.

Leah Guy launched her attacks in Birmingham city center on the sloping footbridge leading down from New Street Station and Grand Central at Stephenson Place, commonly referred to as the ‘ramp’.

She confessed to drinking heavily that evening and apologized to the “truly innocent” victims, who were both injured and shaken.

Mrs Guy, of Eathorpe Close, Shard End, twice admitted to being assaulted by hitting. On 26 January she was sentenced to 16 weeks’ imprisonment by the Birmingham Magistrates’ Court, suspended for 12 months and ordered to pay compensation to the victims.

District Judge David Wain described her behavior as “appalling” but felt sympathy for her because of her difficult background.

Prosecutor Alinah Iqbal said Guy approached the first woman and “hit her on the head with a Desperados bottle” before targeting the second woman who she “kicked to the ground and continued to attack.”

In an impact statement, one of the victims said, “I don’t feel safe anymore. I went out with family to enjoy myself. I feel vulnerable and no longer safe.’

The other victim said, “I feel uncomfortable leaving my house and I don’t know why this happened. I didn’t do anything wrong. I didn’t expect anything to happen to me. I only went to the city center to have fun.’

Raj Dew, on his defence, told the court about some of the difficulties Guy faced growing up, including losing her father in tragic circumstances.

She stated that this was her first offense as an adult, saying, “She said she was very drunk and can remember very little of what happened.

‘She had been to a pub to celebrate with friends. She was in a bar and was constantly getting drinks and she was drinking them constantly. She has apologized to these innocent victims who are really innocent and she accepts that.

“She has a supporter. She manages her finances. She’s been through a lot of trouble. Sometimes things go wrong. She’s trying very hard.’

Footage played in court showed a large number of people at the scene from a distance.

Judge Wain acknowledged that Guy had the “normal decency to plead guilty if the CCTV footage wasn’t overwhelming because she wanted to take responsibility.”

He ordered her to pay £150 in damages to each victim and complete 30 days of rehabilitation activity. He also imposed a two-month curfew between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m.

Judge Wain said: “This was appalling behavior in the city center where people went out for a night out to enjoy the many sights Birmingham has to offer, not go out to be attacked, especially in a place that is so public like this.

“It not only impacts those who are attacked, but also those who see it. I have to weigh that against the fact that you’re young and the horrible life you’ve had so far. I say that out of sympathy, not judgment.’
