Actor Jeremy Renner was trying to save his nephew when his snow plow started to slide, when he was pulled underwater in Lake Tahoe on New Year’s Day and crushed to death.
The 14,000-pound PistenBully snowcat vehicle began sliding sideways after the 52-year-old Avengers star used it to pull his adult cousin’s truck out of the snow.
The massive tracked vehicle completely rolled over the Hollywood star, leaving him with 30 broken bones and continuing on his way.
The parking brake on the shift was not engaged and would have stopped the horrific accident, according to a redacted incident report from the Nevada Sheriff.
Actor Jeremy Renner was trying to save his nephew when his snow plow started to slide, when he was pulled underwater and crushed on New Year’s Day in Nevada
“The PistenBully snowplow began to slide, causing Renner to get out of the vehicle without using the emergency brake,” the report says, according to CNN, which obtained the report through a request for public records.
“While the PistenBully had some mechanical issues, based on our mechanical inspection, it is believed that the parking brake would prevent the PistenBully from moving forward. When Renner tried to stop or divert the PistenBully to avoid injury to (his nephew), he was pulled under the vehicle by the track and run over.”
CNN said the report indicates “mechanical issues may have played a role in this accident,” noting that the brake indicator light in the crew cab was not working.
According to the report, Renner’s cousin was able to help the actor until emergency services arrived. He was airlifted to hospital, where he was held for more than two weeks and underwent at least two surgeries.

According to the report, which details the accident as accurately as possible, Renner told investigators at the hospital on Jan. 5 that the incident began to unfold after he dragged his cousin’s truck out of his driveway.
He dragged the truck, which became stuck after unusually heavy snowfall in the area, onto the street.
At that point, the snowplow began to “slide sideways,” he told investigators, then began to roll down the hill in its tracks.
According to the report, Renner jumped out of the squad’s cab, but soon realized the vehicle was on course to hit his cousin directly.
“He feared the PistenBully might hit[his cousin]so he decided to try to stop or divert the PistenBully,” the report said, according to CNN.
To get back into the cab, Renner had to climb onto the moving rails. As he did so, he was “immediately pulled under the left side lane,” the report says.
In a 911 call, also received by CNN, the caller is heard saying that the actor was “completely crushed under a big snow cat.”
A neighbor, who placed the call, says Renner was having trouble breathing and began to fall asleep. The 911 operator is heard telling the caller to be kept awake.
The neighbor explains that they wrapped him in blankets, but says ‘the right side of his chest … collapsed – upper body crushed’.
In a separate audio released to TMZ last week, Renner can be heard moaning repeatedly in the background of the emergency call as the neighbor, who remained unnamed, explained his injuries.
Friends and family close to the ‘Bourne Legacy’ star said he ‘almost died’ while waiting for help and that it could take up to ‘two years’ to recover from the blunt chest trauma and orthopedic injuries.
In the audio clip, the unknown neighbor can be heard telling Renner to “keep quiet” repeatedly while the operator asks him questions.
“I need the emergency address,” you hear the female operator say to the male caller.
“Told you so,” the male caller says in frustration as Renner continues to moan in pain in the background.
“I know, I just need to verify, what is the phone number you are calling from,” said the female operator.
“Immediately someone was run over by a snow cat, hurry up,” you hear him say.
“Which phone do you use to call, in case the connection drops,” she says.
The star underwent two surgeries to have metal pins placed around his legs, along with chest surgery, after he was left in critical condition following the horror accident
“Tell me exactly what happened,” you hear her say. The neighbor replied, “I don’t know, someone is standing in front of my house and he was run over by a snow cat. He’s crushed.’
‘Call ambulance, ambulance,’ he said, interrupted by the operator who heard say ‘everyone is on their way’.
A pause in the phone call gives way to the gurgling moans of Renner, who friends said nearly “bleeded” during the incident.
“Listen to me, you might want to get a lifeline right here,” you hear the audibly distressed neighbor say.
“Okay, give me a minute,” says the female operator before asking, “What’s he bleeding from?”
“I don’t know, I can’t tell,” says the neighbor before explaining that Renner was crushed on his right chest, upper torso, adding that his “ribs may have been crushed.”
He also has a head injury. Can you give me an ETA?’ he is heard saying in the recorded emergency number.
“It’s hard to give an ETA just because the snow on the mountain I don’t know how fast they can go,” the female operator said as the neighbor explained his breath getting shorter and shorter.
‘How is he doing?’ she is heard asking. “Shallow breath, a lot of pain, he is conscious that we put him in blankets, his head is covered, he will float away.”
Jeremy Renner shared a photo of his physical therapy session last week from his hospital bed at his home in Lake Tahoe, Nevada. He was seen in the picture with his hands folded over his abdomen and his head tilted against the cushions of his hospital bed as a physiotherapist bends his knee
After returning home, he encouraged fellow Reno and Lake Tahoe residents to be careful about the extreme weather, saying he missed his “happy place.”
“Is he starting to fall asleep a little?” she asks, to which the neighbor replies, “Yes.”
The audio makes it clear that the 52-year-old needed life-saving equipment and had been screaming in pain for more than 15 minutes.
Renner was later airlifted to hospital from a private road covered in thick snow.
Images show how the emergency helicopter takes off from the winter landscape and disappears behind snowy mountain peaks.
Renner’s condition has been described by sources close to the American actor as much more serious than previously reported.
At the time, Renner’s reps said he suffered blunt chest trauma and orthopedic injuries and was in a critical but stable condition after surgery.
The actor is reportedly aware he has a long road to recovery ahead of him, with friends saying it could take up to two years for him to get back into shape.
Last week, the actor shared a photo of his physiotherapy session.
He was seen in the photo with his hands folded over his abdomen and his head tilted against the cushions of his hospital bed as a physical therapist bends his knee.
The star’s bed was next to floor-to-ceiling windows, giving the Marvel actor a beautiful view to enjoy as he continues to recover.
On Saturday, the actor continued to hope that the “30 plus broken bones will heal, grow stronger, just as the love and bond with family and friends deepens.”
Renner is the eldest of seven siblings, the youngest of whom was born in 2011.
In the days following the accident, the star shared a clip of him being pampered by his supportive sister and mother while receiving a relaxing scalp massage.
It was not immediately clear which brother and sister Renner is the cousin of.
