Italian diplomatic properties vandalized in Germany, Spain

MILAN – Italy’s prime minister said in a statement on Saturday that Italian diplomatic properties had been targeted by vandalism in Germany and Spain.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said diplomat Luigi Estero’s car was set on fire in Berlin, while the Italian consulate in Barcelona was vandalized. There were no reports of injuries. According to the Italian news agency ANSA, both incidents took place on Friday.

Meloni said the Italian government is “following with concern and attention these new cases of violence against our officials and diplomatic missions”.

The violence comes almost two months after an arson attack at the home of an Italian diplomat in Athens. A little-known anarchist group claimed responsibility, calling it a show of solidarity with an imprisoned Italian militant anarchist who has been on hunger strike for three months over prison conditions.
