A major highway has been closed after reports of a ‘suspicious package’ found near a busy shopping centre.

Officers rushed to the Maroondah Highway near Ringwood in Melbourne’s east shortly after 11am on Thursday after reports of a ‘suspicious package’ near the Eastland shopping centre.

Police confirmed that the highway has been closed for a security check.

The bomb squad is en route to the crime scene as police helicopters circle the area from above.

The highway is closed in both directions between Ringwood Bypass and Warrandyte Road.

“East and westbound traffic on the Maroondah Highway has been closed and motorists are advised to avoid the area,” a police statement said.

Motorists are urged to use Ringwood Bypass and Warrandyte Road or Ringwood Street and allow extra time when traveling through the area.
