Nicole Kidman receives AFI Life Achievement Award

Nicole Kidman has an important date on her calendar for 2023.

The Oscar-winning actress and producer has been selected to receive the 49th AFI Life Achievement Award at a gala ceremony at Hollywood’s Dolby Theater on June 10. In making the announcement, the American Film Institute noted that she will become the first Australian actor to receive the honour.

Kidman, 55, has a career that stretches back to the early 1980s and she has built a reputation as a versatile artist who has long gravitated to working for visionary authors such as Jane Campion, Sofia Coppola, Baz Luhrmann, Anthony Minghella, Sydney Pollack, Lars von Trier and Stanley Kubrick.

Kathleen Kennedy, chair of the AFI board of trustees, took note of Kidman’s choices in confirming today’s news. “Nicole Kidman has captivated audiences for decades with the boldness of her artistry and the glamor of a movie icon,” said Kennedy. “She is a force that is both courageous in her choices and courageous in every performance.”

Five-time Oscar nominee Kidman won for her turn as Virginia Woolf Doors in 2003. After her breakthrough in 1989 Dead calmKidman has taken on the lead role Days of thunder, Eyes wide closed, Moulin Rouge!, Dogville, Far away, Batman forever, To die for, The others, Cold mountain, Birth, Rabbit hole, Killing a sacred deer, Aquarius, Bomb and The Norman on the big screen. On TV, her credits are inclusive Big little lies, Top of the lake, Undo it and Nine perfect strangers.

She will play the next lead role in the series Expats, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Lioness and Netherlands, Michigan.

Kidman joins a long list of previous AFI Life Achievement Award recipients including Bette Davis, Alfred Hitchcock, James Stewart, Gene Kelly, Kirk Douglas, Sidney Poitier, Elizabeth Taylor, Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Harrison Ford, Barbra Streisand, Tom Hanks, Meryl Streep, Al Pacino, Morgan Freeman, Jane Fonda, Steve Martin, Diane Keaton, George Clooney, Denzel Washington and Julie Andrews, and many more.
