With the holidays just around the corner, it’s time to think about sparkling wines. (Yes, bubbly is delicious and appropriate all year round, but the vast majority of sales are in November and December.) Here are three to get you in party mode, at a variety of prices to fit your party and budget needs. comply.
Belle Jardin Blancs de Blancs Brut
Here’s a simple sparkler that’s great for holiday parties. Made with chenin blanc and pinot blanc grapes, it is lightly floral with a hint of pastry dough. It’s perfect for the salty snacks we often hand out at parties and it’s also budget-friendly. Alcohol by volume: 11.5 percent. Bottle weight: 555 grams (light for sparkling).
Carlos Serres Método Tradicional Brut 2019
Wow, here’s an eye opener! Sparkling wine has been produced in Rioja for over a century, usually referred to as cava rather than its regional name. Rafa Vivanco, owner of Carlos Serres, convinced Rioja’s wine council to adopt slightly stricter standards than cava for bubbles to be labeled as rioja, and with this Brut 2019 he emphatically demonstrates that the region can produce stunning effervescence. It is a blend of viura, chardonnay and tempranillo blanco, aged on the lees for a minimum of 15 months. The label also tells us when the wine was poured, information that more sparkling wine producers should include. Aromas of white flowers and wild herbs lead to aromas of ripe orchard fruits and a hint of kumquat. Lively acidity keeps the wine fresh and lively. Alc: 12 percent. BW: 935 grams (Sparkling).
Champagne Albert Lebrun Grand Cru Brut
The Côte des Blancs in Champagne gives the chardonnay a magnificent expression. This delicious specimen tastes as if aging on the lees and in the bottle has given it a fuller mouthfeel and richer texture. Classic champagne flavors of brioche, slightly overripe apples and toasted nuts round out the palate. Like a long conversation that takes you down different paths, there’s something new in every sip. Alc: 12 percent. BW: 835 grams (Sparkling).
