The 1995 cult classic centered on five teens from very different backgrounds who end up serving their high school detention together. The cast of The breakfast club – which contained Anthony Michael Hall, Emilio Estevez, Ally Sheedy, Molly Ringwald And Judd Nelson – quickly found success for their involvement in the iconic coming-of-age story.
Ringwald, who worked with Hughes on other films such as Ferris Bueller’s day off And Beautiful in pinklater explained why she was not thinking The breakfast club aged well since its release.
In a 2018 essay for The New Yorkersthe actress recalled her initial concerns about watching the movie with her daughter.
“I didn’t expect it to end up worrying me the most,” says the California resident, who shares children Mathilda, Adele and Roman with her husband Panio Gianopoulos, wrote in response to scenes she found problematic years later. “If attitudes toward female submission are systemic, and I believe they are, it stands to reason that the art we consume and endorse plays a role in reinforcing that same attitude.”
She continued: “How should we feel about art that we both love and oppose? What if we are in the unusual position of having helped create it? Erasing history is a dangerous path when it comes to art – change is essential, but so is remembering the past, in all its transgressions and barbarism, so that we can properly assess how far we have come, and also how far we still have to go.”
After he joined The CW’s River valley in 2017, Ringwald’s legendary film was the subject of a special episode in the third season of the series. The show’s flashback episode, titled “The Midnight Club”, paid homage to The breakfast club by having the protagonists play younger versions of their parents on screen.
“It’s an episode called ‘The Midnight Club.’ That’s our take on sort of The breakfast club. Obviously the much darker Riverdale version of that, ‘showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa shared during the 2018 Television Critics Association press tour.”Camilla [Mendes] plays a young Hermione (Marisol Nichols), Cole [Sprouse] plays a young FP (Scheeth Ulrich), KJ [Apa] will dye his hair brown and play a young Fred Andrews (Luke Perry).
