Selena has been open about her struggle with bipolar disorder. “I’m going to be very open about this with everyone: I’ve been to four treatment centers,” Gomez revealed Rolling stone in 2022. “I think when I got into my early twenties, things started to get really dark, when I started to feel like I had no control over what I was feeling, whether that was really great or really bad.” Her highs and lows lasted for weeks or months at a time, prompted by nothing she could put her finger on. Sometimes she couldn’t sleep for days. She would experience periods of mania followed by lows. “It would start with depression, then it would go into isolation. Then I just couldn’t get out of bed. I didn’t want anyone to talk to me. My friends brought me food because they love me, but none of us knew what it was. Sometimes I lay in bed for weeks, where even walking downstairs would make me breathless.” She even contemplated suicide for a few years.”I thought the world would be a better place without me,” she said.

While Selena stays away from strict diets, she nourishes her body with food. So told her wellness expert Amy Rosoff Davis Byrdie that she fills her dressing room with veggies and protein and brown rice or whole grains. “I made a lot of rice bowls with vegetables, protein and avocado for Selena. It helped give her the energy and stamina she needed to get through her shows. I also made a healthy chicken salad with grapes and celery – it quenched her thirsty and the protein filled her up,” she added.

Selena also prioritizes hydration. “We used to drink a lot of water and drink green tea when we needed a pick-me-up — it sure was exhausting at times,” Davis said. According to the US National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, men should drink about 15.5 cups (3.7 liters) of fluids per day and women about 11.5 cups (2.7 liters) of fluids.

Selena and Davis focus on “interval and circuit training — and building a strong core,” Davis told Byrdie. “My whole thing is toning mixed with cardio and stretching,” she added. In a recent TikTok, Gomez gives fans a glimpse of her grueling workout, doing moves like overhand arm raises, weighted squats, weighted leg lifts, donkey kicks, stretches, and crunches with a medicine ball.

Selena also remains active through various other methods. “[Selena and I] do everything from Pilates to walking to dance cardio to circuit training to yoga and spinning — the list goes on,” Davis told Byrdie.

Selena likes fast food. “So I’m trying to stay skinny but I went to Jack in the Box and I got four tacos, three spring rolls, onion rings and a spicy chicken sandwich,” she once said in a social media video captured by the Instagram account @selenagomezecu2.0. “But honestly I don’t care about my weight because people complain about it anyway,” she continued, adding that she’s heard people say “you’re too big,” or that her clothes don’t fit. “Meh, meh, meh, meh,” she continued. “B**ch, I’m perfect the way I am. Moral of the story? Bye.”
