Similar scenes of harrowing rescues, as well as desperate searches for missing loved ones, have been rippling this week from Turkey and Syria and across social media. The posts – including photos, videos and text – have given the world a glimpse into the hunt for survivors of one of the region’s worst earthquake-related disasters in nearly a century.
Nearly 8,000 people have been killed in both countries, according to officials and rescuers. Thousands more are injured or missing, and teams race to find survivors in the frigid cold.
The recovery of the newborn girl in Jinderis was one of the most dramatic. According to accounts, her relatives heard her cry, cut her umbilical cord and pulled her out of the rubble.
Later, at a hospital in nearby Afrin, her doctor told the Associated Press he believes she was born under the wreckage. Her parents and four siblings died when their four-story home collapsed, Agence France-Presse reported.
The scale of the search and rescue effort is overwhelming, especially in the rebel-held area of northwestern Syria, which has already been ravaged by years of war and a protracted humanitarian crisis.
Film material shared on social media by Syrian Civil Defense shows rescuers with headlights on their signature white helmets digging through bricks until one of them grabs the foot of a boy named Haroun, dragging them out from under a slab of concrete and into the night sky as he groans pain.
40 hours a day for loading the washing machine
Another video shows volunteers in the city of Atmeh drilling for the body of a child, which they brought out alive after more than 20 hours. In one viral clipwhat The Washington Post was unable to verify, a young girl, pinned under concrete and carrying a toddler in the crook of her arm, says she will do anything for her rescuers as long as they save her.
In another, filmed Tuesday by Syrian activist-journalist Karam Kellieh in the Haram city of Idlib province, cheers, applause and cries of “God is great” greet a young girl rescued from the rubble. The waiting crowd passes the girl, dressed in a pink jacket with a long braid hanging down her back, person to person – followed by another young boy and girl. Rescue workers then carry a smiling man out on a stretcher. Hands are stretched out from all sides to touch this family who – 40 hours after the earthquake – came out alive.
Also on the Turkish side of the border, scene after nerve-racking scene, survivors were pulled from the ruins. In Malatya, footage released by Turkish NGO IHH showed rescuers lifting a man alive from the remains of a 135-bed hotel that had completely collapsed after the earthquake.
But many house searches didn’t result in bodies being pulled out alive — if at all.
Turks living in Istanbul shared addresses on Twitter of those they knew in the affected areas, begging rescuers to help. Some, driven from their homes, expressed a sense of frustration and defeat.
“My grandparents are still under the rubble 41 hours after the earthquake,” says Kaula Faunlenn wrote on Twitter. “We sleep in the car. Still have vibrations. Some of my childhood friends, my relatives are dead. Some are still missing. Gee, it’s so heavy.”
For members of the Syrian and Turkish diasporas, the social media posts prompted frantic calls to learn the fate of their relatives – and new fears for their countries of origin.
Merve Kayikci, a scientist living in Amsterdam and working for a Belgian university, relies on social media to seek news about her relatives in Antakya in Hatay province. Residents have criticized what they describe as a slow and insufficient mobilization of Turkish authorities to carry out rescue operations there.
Kayikci’s cousin and his 8-year-old son are trapped under their building. “We heard that they are still alive, that they have called out from under the rubble,” she said in an interview late Tuesday. Heavy machinery to dig through the rubble did not arrive until late Tuesday evening.
Relatives from Istanbul share updates on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, which Kayikci passes on to her father in a chain of information sharing made possible by social media as regular phone lines are down.
In England, Karim al-Jian first saw news about the earthquake on Twitter.
Born in Aleppo and raised in the UK, the 26-year-old doctor was up late visiting his parents in Lancashire. In the early hours of Monday morning, his feed exploded with reports of the first earthquake, the epicenter of which was the Turkish province of Kahramanmaras. Jian knew that if Idlib had been very shocked, the outcome would not be good.
“There is no such thing as a stable building in Idlib,” he said. “Buildings have been damaged by what is now more than a decade of relentless bombing.”
Jian broke the news to his father, who called his grandmother in Aldana, the village in Idlib where their extended family lives. She and Jian’s aunt were unharmed, but his grandmother’s building was damaged and the walls were cracked. His grandmother, who has Alzheimer’s, was lucky: Some of the neighbors’ houses had been completely razed to the ground, he said.
Community Facebook pages gave Jian, hundreds of miles away, a glimpse of the damage to his family’s village.
“It’s hard to distinguish what was bombed or what was destroyed by the earthquake,” he said.
The doctor in green is my cousin Abdulrahman. He is an orthopedic intern at Idlib Hospital and from the moment the earthquake happened, he has saved countless lives with not a single second of rest. He is only 24. Please keep him in your prayers. I am so very proud of him pic.twitter.com/gAH8SE29iO

On Tuesday evening, Jian was able to contact his cousin, Abdulrahman, a doctor who is completing his residency in trauma and orthopedics in Idlib. He took a break after a 24-hour shift to treat patients injured in the quake, he said, before heading back to the hospital.
