Ten killed in apartment fire in northwestern China’s Xinjiang

BEIJING – A fire at an apartment building in northwestern China’s Xinjiang region killed ten people and injured nine, authorities said Friday.

The fire broke out on Thursday night in the regional capital of Urumqi, where temperatures dropped below freezing after dark. It took about three hours to extinguish the fire.

The injured are all expected to survive and the cause of the fire is under investigation, the local government said.

The tragedy comes days after 38 people died in a fire at an industrial trading company in central China caused by welding sparks setting cotton fabric on fire.

Four people have been detained over the fire in Anyang city and local authorities have ordered extensive security inspections.

Outdated infrastructure, poor safety awareness and, in some cases, government corruption have led to a series of recent fires, explosions and building collapses across China, which continues to grapple with new COVID-19 outbreaks, leading to lockdowns and severe travel restrictions affecting millions of people. meet .
