A lesser-known iPhone tool – known as ‘Live Text’ – can translate foreign text in seconds
iPhone users take note: a handy tool built into your phone can make traveling abroad a lot easier.
The little-known tool — known as “Live Text” — can translate foreign text in seconds, allowing you to navigate everything from menus to foreign turn signals with ease.
It can also convert currencies in an instant, making it easier to monitor your spending abroad.
Live Text can be used on the iPhone XS, iPhone XR and later models of the Apple device.
The feature is built into the Photos app on the phone – just take a photo or video of the text you want to translate or the price tag you want to convert.
Live Text automatically detects text in the image, and then a symbol appears as a series of lines within a broken square in the frame.
You simply tap the symbol and then several options appear in a balloon, including the choice to translate the text and convert currencies. Languages that can be translated include French, Japanese and Cantonese.
Other options include ‘select’ and ‘copy text’, so you can paste the original text and/or translation into your notepad or messaging app.

There is also the option to ‘look up’ the text, which will lead you to online information related to the content.
In addition, there is a sharing function that allows you to send the text to others – such as your travel companions – via AirDrop, email and so on.
Depending on the content of the text, options to perform other actions will also appear, such as making a call, visiting a website link, or getting directions to a location mentioned.
If you want to go back to the Photos app, just tap the Live Text icon again and you’ll be able to flip through your holiday snaps again.
Live Text works with cellular service, an internet connection, and Wi-Fi.
