Ukraine live briefing: Russia lashes out as US and Germany about to send main battle tanks to Ukraine

The United States and Germany are expected to unveil plans on Wednesday to supply heavy battle tanks to Ukraine, following months of lobbying by Kiev as the war in Russia approaches a year and shows no signs of ending.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is expected to meet with his cabinet on Wednesday before making a formal announcement in parliament about the German-made Leopard 2 battle tanks around 1:00 PM local time (7:00 AM Eastern Time). In the US, officials say the Biden administration has decided to provide M1 Abrams tanks despite previous concerns that they may require too much training and maintenance for the Ukrainian armed forces.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on Wednesday denounced the plans as a “profound delusion” and said the tanks “would burn like any other”.

Here’s the latest on the war and its ripple effects around the world.

Even older versions of the tank have modern optics, including thermal imaging, which allows it to operate day and night, as well as magnification and a laser rangefinder to track targets. The tanks are built to move fast, with a maximum speed of about 70 kilometers per hour despite their weight of 55 tons, the manufacturer said. And they are powered by a diesel engine, which makes them relatively easy to fuel.
