Wayne and Coleen Rooney arrive at Old Trafford as legend cheers on Man Utd

WAYNE ROONEY got over his Birmingham City sacking by returning to the scene of so many former glories at Old Trafford.

The Manchester United and England legend was axed by the Championship club on January 2 after just two wins from 15 matches in charge.

The 38-year-old was appointed in October after the controversial sacking of John Eustace with Brum sitting sixth.

But Rooney left St Andrew’s having led the slump down the table to 20th with the 3-0 loss at Leeds on New Year’s Day his final match at the helm.

The Liverpool-born star, who previously managed Derby and DC United, vowed to take a well-deserved rest with wife Coleen and their children after receiving his P45.

And the Rooneys are enjoying a day out this afternoon as they headed to Old Trafford to watch United take on Tottenham in the Premier League.

Wayne was spotted walking into the Theatre of Dreams alongside his sons Kai, 13, Klay, 10, Kit, seven, and Cass, five.

And Coleen was also by his side for the return to the club where he spent 13 years as a player.

Rooney became the world’s most-expensive teenager when he left boyhood side Everton for United in 2004 in a £25.6million deal.

The ex-striker went on to win five Premier League titles, the Champions League, the FA Cup, Fifa Club World Cup, Europa League and the League Cup four times.

He also scored 253 goals in 559 appearances – making him United’s all-time top scorer after surpassing Sir Bobby Charlton’s record.

Rooney returned to Everton in 2017 for a season before heading to DC United in the MLS for the 2018-19 campaign.

He then came back to England to finish his playing days with Derby before taking over as manager to begin his coaching journey.

After guiding the Rams to safety in his first season in charge, he still won plaudits the following year when they were relegated from the Championship amid turmoil off the pitch and a huge points deduction.

Rooney resigned after they dropped to League One and went on to join MLS side DC United, who he played for towards the end of his iconic career.

But he struggled to make much of an impact in America as he racked up just 13 wins and 26 defeats from his 52 games at the helm prior to his ill-fated spell at Birmingham.
